Pet Picks Of The Weekend - CARAWAY + CAYENNE - RSPCA - Middlesex

Having I work long hours and have worked 6 days this week, I have been very busy and it has been hard to keep the blog updated with a pet of the day, so I apologize again but there shall be two pets of the day.
Sometimes it just isn't possible for me to post and I hope you can understand that, some morning I start 8am and some evening I leave 8pm, and sometimes I do morning to evening so it is 8 to 8 having 1 hour approximate to reach my house from work, therefore there are times I am exhausted.

PET PICKS for the WEEKEND

Colour: Grey & Brown
Age: 3-6 Months
Ref: 13212 13213
This nosey pair are just some of the gerbils we have taken into our care after their numbers started to increase rapidly after a sexing mistake.
They are all friendly and easy to handle, despite being very fast. They are incredibly inquisitive and love being able to investigate something new. These guys are looking for a home as a pair. They are going to need a nice large deep tank, for lots of digging, tunnelling and burrowing!
caraway the boy has been castrated so there shouldn't be any unexpected additions!

Originally brought to the Centre after having been abandoned in a livery yard for a year with another horse, Gertie is at Southridge looking for a very special new owner. Having worked with Gertie, it has become apparent that something awful must have happened to her in her previous life. She literally goes into a blind panic as soon as you try to tack her up. We have had specialists here to assess her, but as we do not want to cause her the stress from keeping on trying, we have decided that Gertie is now just going to be a companion horse. Gertie has spent her life with another horse called Doris, who is also residing at our Centre. The two of them are very fond of each other. It is important that Gertie has new friends in her new home, as she is very happy around other horses. Gertie will need someone experienced, who can take her under their wing.

Pet For Adoption - Pick Of The Day - Benson - Cat - Battersea - Berkshire SL4 2JN

Benson (special needs)

Benson is a male White/Tabby Domestic Shorthair. He is based at the Old Windsor branch of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.
Benson was brought to Battersea as his previous owners had abandoned him, due to this we have no history on this gorgeous boy. Benson has tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) please follow link for more details about virus:http://www.icatcare.org/advice-centre/cat-health/feline-immunodeficiency-virus-fiv
Benson will now need to be kept as an indoor cat but he has obviously lived an active life previously, due to this he will need access to an outside space, e.g. balcony, roof terrace, secure run or similar. Benson is very friendly and affectionate, he loves nothing more than being stroked and groomed, he will be a fun and interactive addition.
Benson is very social with people, due to this he would prefer owners that do not work very long hours so he has some human company and the opportunity for games and stimulation. Benson is a lovely boy with lots to offer. *Any new owner will need to speak to a Battersea vet about FIV prior to taking this lovely lad home*

Stray In The Family - Poetry

Here I am a crossbreed
Not pure not pedigree
I don't belong to any breed
I have no papers to approve of me
I walk the streets, no owners to my name
Every day life is the same
I battle and struggle to survive
No one wants to say "that dog is mine"
Then one day someone shoes compassion only to my neck catch and tangle
By some stranger that was told I'm a vandal
They strap me in, in the back of their van
Caged, trapped I wonder my fate
In a world where I've seen so much hate
I'm placed in a strange prison
The noise is deafening
People come by and stare
I have no clue to what crime I've committed to be there
Then one day
Someone stops and stares
Somebody says "I want that one over there"
I jump and I plead "please don't harm me"
I try to be cute to appeal to their compassion within
Somebody gets a key, and they take me away
I hear someone say "here's your new family"
Could it be? Is my fate to change?
Now and here with someone strange?
I go on a journey, my nerves at a peak
At the back of the car I end up being sick
The stranger is patient and cleans it up real quick
He gives me a petting rather than hit me with a stick
We arrive at a mansion though he says his house is small
I pray its the only home I will ever know
Now I'm here
Grey and old
Wagging my tail with my stranger
My last days have come and gone
I'm living now on borrowed time
I jump on the sofa, a bit stiff and sore
I lay my head on my strangers lap once more
I take a sigh of gratitude
As I fade into another altitude
I lived a hard life that is for sure
But my stranger gave me a home
Somewhere I didn't feel alone
In my last moments
Moments of bliss
He was my family even if not part of the family tree
The lights go off in my mind
I'm gone now
But I lived my final days
Not as a pedigree or crossbreed
But as family

Hope - Poetry

Give me wings and set me free
Watch and learn as I make history
One with the power to change many
Like a ripple that turns into a Tsunami
Let me be myself
In good or bad health
I don't need money if I have spiritual wealth
Times will pass and I'll get older
I will not be quiet I will become bolder
Allow me to accomplish my dreams
Through any sort of means
And I will regret only the things I did not do
In the pursuit of making my dreams come true
Don't let me quit, stand by my side
Help me to feel more alive
My motivation may be weak
My future may be bleak
But as long as I have hope
I'll have my heart in my throat
Pounding strong
Going on
All I have is the faith of others to pull me through
And right now I depend on you

Meet one of our male mice here at the centre. Ollie is a sweet boy who needs a new home. Originally from another centre as he had no luck finding a new home there, came into us for help.
Ollie is a young adult, and needs to be rehomed on his own. Mice can make great pets, as they are fast moving, great acrobats who love to climb and hang from their cage. Daily handling is needed so they become accustom to you and allow you to have play time outside the cage. Mice need gentle handling so adult supervision or older children are ideal. Pop in if you can offer Ollie here a new home!

Once Again... Disappointment Comes Knocking

I was looking into courses that entailed working with animals and came across a vacancy to work as a groom assistant on the Pets At Home branch opening on Old Kent Road, a former Comet store that had closed down I read. It had all the makings of me getting my foot in the door and breaking into the pet industry, I could finally catch my break and do something I'd dreamed, to work with animals, it wasn't the Vet Assistant Role but it was a breakthrough nonetheless into being in an industry I aspired to work in. The catch was they requested experience in a pet grooming setting, something I did not have with smaller animals despite some light horse grooming.
I got busy, I looked and looked over the internet trying to find a quick and reliable form of communicating with pets at home to express my passion for the industry and request an exception in regards to the experience as I was very eager to learn and willing to make compromises on my behalf to get considered such as reduced wages.
I failed to find an email address to the relevant source and hoping for a speedy reply I thought that writing via post would be time lost that I could be applying to the position. I found a facebook page and messaged them immediately, the person corresponding with me, Chris was very helpful, friendly and quick to reply and told me I could count my horse grooming experience as grooming experience and that after talking to the relevant sector that I'd be eligible to apply and wished me good luck.
I got home after a long 12 hour shift in care work, and despite working the next day I stayed up until 2 am trying to tweak and perfect my CV and submit my application.
I was very excited and mentioned it to someone at work that I'd seen the job vacancy and had applied, the rumour started at work that I had a new job already and was leaving, rumours spread like wildfire sometimes and always seem to return in 1000 different ways from the original source, a job vacancy that I was excited about was being stretched and mixed into a job I already had according to people approaching me at work. So besides wanting the job because I really wanted It, if I'd not be successful I'd have all the rumours that I had it already and was leaving to taunt me.
I waited anxiously, a few days later, an email arrived entitled "RE: Dog Grooming Assistant Stylist"..."Pets at Home Application", I gasped, and help my breath with a feeling of dread and excitement, chills going up and down my spine, this was the start of something, a new beginning, a possibility of doing something I not only want but enjoy, I opened the email... as history repeating itself when it comes to jobs I really want, I was shot down when I opened the email and started to read it:
"Dear Sheara
Thank you for applying for the position of Dog Grooming Assistant Stylist - Old Kent Road *New Salon* with Pets at Home. We are really sorry but on this occasion your application has not been successful.
At Pets at Home, we are very proud of our business and we are truly grateful that you have taken the time and energy to apply for a position with us.
We would like to wish you every success and happiness with whatever you do in the future
Kind Regards
The Pets at Home Team"
My heart sunk and I felt so empty, I'd not even been considered for an interview. I replied asking for the reason I'd not even been shortlisted whilst expressing my hope to work in the industry. They replied that I did not have the grooming experience they required, I felt gutted. I'd applied previously to animal shelters and vets to work as a volunteer but the vets said they didn't have facilities for volunteers and the shelters were overwhelmed by volunteers so how was I to gain experience?
I replied with a plead to reconsider me, how I'm willing to do unpaid overtime, lower wages than their pay, until I gained more experience, to please give me the opportunity, I've not gotten a reply to my last email in days.
My dream to work with animals appears to be just that at the moment, a far away dream, whenever I try to get my foot in the industry I get the door shut on it.

Mircrochipping

Found this on a site and thought it might be of interest.
I think it is very important to microchip your pet, even if it is an indoor pet, you never know if it could be stolen, if it goes outdoors it could possibly get lost in the few minutes it takes you to read the text message you just received. Maybe they manage to escape through a door left open by mistake.... Whatever the case, loosing your pet is stressful not only for you but the animal in question. If they don't find the owner of the found pet, they might need to make important decisions, possibly of life or death such as a risky operation to save it after that car hit it when it was lost looking for you, and maybe it survives the ordeal and has to go through the stress of looking for a new home, it might not cope with the change very well.... There are many reasons one should take it seriously.

Post on the topic:
"

The Importance of Microchipping...

A photo of the two Huskies“One Friday morning we were in our fully fenced garden when “somehow” we managed to squeeze ourselves behind the garden shed, break an old fence panel and make our bid for freedom! Our Dad had already had a husky, our furbro who sadly died, and so thought the garden was well and truly husky proof...it is now!
We then made our way across the local housing estate and up to the nearby railway station, then taking a right onto a dual carriageway. Our vet at this point was already getting calls from people saying 'expect two huskies to be arriving' from worried motorists. Once on the dual carriageway, a police lady who was on her way to work in her van and another kind lady created a 'rolling road block' with their cars to slow the traffic and finally cornered us down a side road in a builder’s yard. The police lady said we happily jumped in her police van as she had her own dog’s toys in there! She then took us to police HQ where we were the centre of attention and had lots of visits from police people and sausages from the police canteen!
We were then taken to a Vet where we were scanned for a chip as we had no collar or ID. The chip numbers came up and it was then realised that we had been taken to our very own vets and our Dad was called. We were very lucky indeed that we both survived, the police lady happened to be there and more importantly that we were bothMICROCHIPPED as we had no other means of identification. We had no treats for a week, as our treat money was spent on 'thank you' flowers for the police lady!
We have since both been bought new collars and tags BUT they can of course fall off whilst “coughs” out and about...
From April 2016, microchipping will be compulsory for Dogs in England and more information on this can be found on the Defra website. If your pet is microchipped please make sure that your contact details are kept up to date. If you move house, change your home or mobile telephone number, contact the relevant microchip reunification service listed below. If your microchipped pet does go missing inform them straight away:

About Me

Meet our lovely large pair of rabbits Apricot and Blackberry!
This lovely pair are very happy friendly rabbits who like a bit of fuss from their owners but are not too keen on being picked up for the attention and prefer to have all 4 feet on the ground.
They both love hopping around out in their run on the grass, running through tunnels jumping on top of boxes before having a good stretch and a lay down.
We are looking to rehome this lovely pair of bunnies to a home together as they are a very bonded pair and enjoy each other's company.
If you think you can offer this pair a home please speak to a member of staff today!

If you are interested in this gorgeous pair please call the centre ahead of your visit, on 0300 777 1570 . Lines are open from 10.30am - 4pm (apart from Thursdays, when we are closed to the public).

Blue Cross recommends that rabbits are housed in a spacious hutch such as a small shed or Wendy house construction with a fenced around surrounding the hutch to provide a permanent run area.

For this beautiful pair their accommodation should be at least 180cm x 90cm floor space x 90cm tall.

This should contain at least 2 rooms. Ideally the run should be attached to the hutch so the rabbits can choose whether to be in or outdoors. The run should be as spacious as possible to allow the rabbit to hop, jump and have total freedom of movement.

If it is not possible to have the run attached to the hutch remember you would need to provide a shelter and shade for your rabbit.

We'd love for you to come and see us. Visitors are welcome to walk around the equine walkway, cattery and small animal section. However, we operate restricted viewing of the dogs to minimise their stress levels.
